First noticed by Diller in 1896, probably already submerged earlier and dead well before (14C dated to 450 BP)!

The scale is difficult to grasp here, but the glacier has lost approx. 1.8 km in length over this period! 📈

Red zones have been extended. However, 4 locations have been identified where re-building could be possible from a natural hazards perspective! ⛰️🌊

Holy moly - this glacier detachment in Tajikistan is WILD. It appears that there was a large piece of glacier ice much farther down the valley from a first detachment which then got pushed by a second soon thereafter. 🧵@planet.com @davepetley.bsky.social 🧪⚒️

Accumulation/ablation were more or less conform to the (strongly negative) average over the last 25 yrs, yielding a net balance of -0,73 m w.e 📈
~clean snowpack (no saharan dust this year) BUT very warm June and August
