Might as well, right?
Try this: If you can replace a lead character in your work with a sexy lamp, you should!

Replace all your characters with sexy lamps. Set the entre work in an IKEA and increase the quality of your work. Imagine your favorite book. Now imagine your favorite book if everyone's a lamp. Waaaaay better

I wonder how much of my difficulty with stuff is just I don't feel seen, I don't feel welcome, and I sorta feel like everyone thinks I'm a terribly confused person who doesn't belong where they are and isn't who they think and are hoping they figure it out eventually.

Dunno, I don't know I like a lot of 1700s art.
actual bluesky challenge: post your favorite work of art from fifty years before you were born.

"I can't confirm the back and forth that went on, but I definitely know it was about this thing and went in a way that confirms I was right" average bluesky behavior

I realize this is more about the nature of art than video games, but I also thoroughly believe any "debate" over this shit is arguing over the obvious, and worse, only seems to come up around either eyerolling "environmental narratives" or big blockbuster pieces

Know what game's art? Enigma Trilogy
So because there's been a lot of talk about this and I'm never one to shut up when there's a lot of motherfuckers talking, time to stumble backwards ass-first into the "are video games art" debate

So what this is telling me is that 8MM is a classic movie and all naysayers should be mocked, because it's incredibly effective with what it's trying to show and say about its fictional world of film.

Which is entirely true, all of that is stuff I agree with vigorously.
I haven't read Black Flame yet (all my homies love it, and I can't wait to give it a whirl myself), but I *have* read Wylding Hall, and it's a terrific variation on this convention-

My moot Page here is onto something.

It's much easier to invoke the idea that an artist might be greater than...
Like— books like Wylding Hall and Black Flame (2 I read this year) do successfully convince me that the works around which they revolve are unbelievably— supernaturally!— compelling and Cool. And I think it’s because they can’t actually show us a clip from the movie or play us a clip from the album.

With "Blanquitos" being a late bloomer (pun intended), I can now make my Eligibility Post:

If you're reading for awards, please consider these two stories.

FYI even if you're not voting for awards, I'd be honored if you read these (links to follow)

I forget that I'm friends with a lot of people on here who have such a massive following that they can just say whatever shit comes into their head without any consequences or backing and that's always a sobering thing to remember.

It's "half at one another's throats," sam, you fucking idiot.
They were fucked up in their turn
By men in old-style hats and coats
Who half the time were soppy-stern
And half all at each other's throats.

Man hands on misery to man
It deepens like a coastal shelf
Get out as early as you can
And don't have any kids yourself.

Lemme see how much I can do of this from memory:

They fuck you up, your mum and dad
They do not mean to but they do
They fill you full of all their faults
And leave room extra, just for you
Which lines of poetry live rent-free in your head?

What gets me about the "medium doesn't dictate art" thing is "okay, where do you draw the line?" The Amusement Park was a public information film. Setting Up A Room is a short instructional reel. Both of these works are art. Is industrial film not art? Fans of Fake Fruit Factory might have words.

The problem with long thread rants on here is

1) I worry that the point gets lost the longer I talk because I can't keep track of myself
2) I can't delete after a certain length if they escape containment
3) Someone who inspired them is gonna see and be pissed and come after me

Also, to add to the fact that I'm on one about the 27,000 word Gish gallop that inspired this post, the "job of critics" is not specifically to review. It is not merely to provide qualitative assessment, we're supposed to interpret, to explain why things resonate with us.
There's no delineation between criticism and art if you're not a fucking wuss. The art's just in the talking about art. You're communicating your experience, your ideas, things you found. That's a craft like any other. That's an art like any other. Good critics make you think, make you feel, same as

If you might have wondered why I'm on one tonight, I'm kinda having a moment. I read something that was effective even as it was dopey as fuck, and basically flipped the "on" switches on my depersonalization and impostor syndrome. I tend to internalize anything that reinforces my self-image.
