Fascinated by food history and science. Writer. Musician. Trekkie. Making magic in the kitchen and obsessing about my sourdough starter. Too stubborn to not have hope.
I was too impatient to let it ripen on the plant #urbangardener

It's a good sign when you go to the local plant nursery so often that the owner recognizes you, right?

Right?

Anyway I got a new plant. Let's grow some onions.

I really need to get better at taking photos of my food after cooking it..even if it takes extra steps for staging and styling a plate.

These are sourdough soft pretzel bites. But they look like chunks of boiled chicken in this photo 😂

Update: crumblier than I expected but salty and delicious 🤤

Get yourself a car plant.

Just don't leave it in the car when it's hot. If you're hot they're hot.

Last weekend I attempted to make sourdough bagels.

The key word here is tried.

But at least they tasted good!

When life gives you flat sourdough, turn it into lemonade - I mean focaccia.

The balsamic moon is delicious on a kale salad with croutons

When the world feels overwhelming, bake something. Then the recipe will also be overwhelming and the world will be slightly less.

Anyway here's some cornbread. 🌽

Help, I can't stop baking things.

Making this galette crust without a pastry cutter was a nightmare on my wrists. This better hold together in the oven 😂

From last weekend's baking adventures: lemon curd thumbprint cookies. Probably the best cookies I've made so far in my one year of baking?

Coleus amboinicus - taken from my father's yard in Florida and transplanted to my California balcony garden.

He calls it oregano. Internet research shows it by many names, including: Mexican mint, Indian borage, French thyme, and Cuban oregano.

One of the fun things about gardening and herbalism is that you can just put a cutting in water for two weeks and grow a new friend

Anyway, here's the mirepoix as jambalaya. I almost lost electricity at least three times while making this but luckily it stayed on #food

Last but not least, sourdough crust pizza! The recipe said to let the dough cold proof for four days (?!) but that seems wholly unnecessary since it was perfect after one day in the fridge.

Fourth project: discard crackers. Don't know why I didn't take an "after" photo but can confirm that crackers made from sourdough discard are delicious, especially with cheese and rosemary.

Third sourdough creation: English muffins. Also first sourdough fail. They looked perfect but were too hard to bite into.

I shouldn't have transferred them to the oven after cooking them in the skillet.

Second up: sourdough dinner rolls! These came out so good I almost cried when I took the first bite.
