What if the government’s own actions incite hatred of the government? … feels a bit seditiousy
This seems to confirm Beijing/GovHK are fully aware of the potential for anger over the Tai Po fire to escalate into mass action.

Sadly (yet predictably) it looks like they've decided to respond by stamping out all attempts to express that anger publicly and pretend that's what the public wants.
Go against public opinion? After a year of unrest, Hong Kong people gave their verdict on the protests in the 2019 district council elections. The result was a landslide defeat for the government. Afterwards, China abolished democracy so it could never happen again.

When insecurity runs deep, everything looks like a security threat. This sort of paranoia will only deepen public resentment and distaste towards the Hong Kong government and its Beijing Overlord.
The HK authorities arrested a student on sedition charges because he made a petition asking the government to 1) ensure accommodation for displaced residents; 2) setup independent investigation; 3) review construction supervision system 4) probe regulatory neglect.

The Office of Safeguarding National Security said it firmly supports strict action against people “using the [Tai Po] disaster to create chaos in Hong Kong” and “resolutely punishing activities that endanger national security,” comparing it to attempts to revive the 2019 unrest

After nearly 10 weeks – and daily chasing via email and WhatsApp for the past week – CX have finally provided a refund timeline: seven more business days. It’s a shame they had to be dragged, kicking and screaming, to this point.
I’ve now been waiting over 9 weeks for my CX refund. Nothing but fluff, waffle and opaqueness from their _formal_ customer service dept. Been a loyal customer for over 24 years. Counts for nothing to today’s CX sadly.

International media, you can do better than this.

"Bamboo" is maybe exotic and a compelling hook but it is too easy. The real story here is the growing culture of corruption, including a lack of accountability and oversight, that enabled a chain of human errors that led to this disaster.

This 2024 post from the DAB’s Peggy Wong is quickly becoming infamous.

In it, the pro-Beijing district councillor dismisses fire safety concerns about the Wang Fuk work as malicious rumours misleading the public, and accuses the Democratic Party of “provocatively live-streaming “ from the scene.
