For everyday South Asian and Muslim Americans, this rise in bigoted rhetoric is not just online. Acts of verbal harassment, intimidation, and even threats of violence against South Asians are being reported to us, or policies that keep us safe, and hold bad actors accountable.

And as Mamdani's campaign continued, the Center for Study of Organized Hate tracked over 35,000 examples of xenophobic and anti-Muslim content on X from June to October 2025.

In July 2025, shortly after the NYC primary election, mentions of Mamdani in extremist online spaces (X, 4chan, Truth Social, etc) rose an alarming 949% compared to a 12-month baseline, according to data from Moonshot commissioned by Stop AAPI Hate.

This is a glaring violation of the First Amendment, which guarantees everyone in the U.S. the right to free speech — regardless of immigration status. DHS is also targeting Vijandre over his refusal to accept an FBI request to “spy” on the pro-Palestinian movement.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed that they targeted Vijandre because of his pro-Palestinian social media posts, just like they did with international students like Yunseo Kim and Mahmoud Khalil.
