THANK YOU We thank our incredible St Martins community with all our hearts! You are a wonder and the reason we do what we do in the most challenging times. We will continue to stand strong and true, and after a short but much needed summer break, we will be back to reach out to you all. We will need allies, champions and supporters to write letters, advocate, agitate, connect us with politicians and arts influencers and more. Watch this space.

ARE WE OK? We are taking a moment to catch our breath and feel the feelings. We will find a way, even if it takes longer and is harder than we had hoped for. Without sustained investment in our company we continue to face the challenges of day-to-day operations and investing in staff.

THE GOOD NEWS We have so much coming up, including our production of The Word at Abbotsford Convent in May, followed by a tour of Gene Tree to Darwin. We do deeply value and give thanks to Creative Australia for continuing to award us with grants for these specific projects.

OUR ACHIEVEMENTS Where do we begin! We have made remarkable works such as Gene Tree and Balit Liwurruk: Strong Girl that have been nominated for and won so many Green Room Awards, including for Best Production, Best Composition, Best Direction, Best Ensemble. We have reached more young people than ever with our iconic inclusive workshop program and our Young Changemakers program for children with barriers to accessing the arts. Our venues are burgeoning with young, emerging and independent artists and companies. The testimonials from our audiences, young people, parents, partners and hirers are overwhelming in their praise. Our amazing team of staff and workshop artists could not be better or give more.

OUR YOUNG PEOPLE We are a training ground at the grass roots of our arts sector. And we are a safe house for the personal development of so many young people. If we aren’t here how will the young people in Victoria who we serve be supported to make art, to learn from collaboration with professional artists, to have a voice that is heard and celebrated?

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR COLLEAGUES We celebrate the wins of the companies that received funding, noting the return of some funds into the youth arts sector. We were part of an intense advocacy process in the past three years with our colleagues across Australia and some inroads have been made.

WHAT IT MEANS We have already been working hard to raise funds to deliver our great outcomes on a lean budget. But now we will add advocating, planning, lateral thinking and more in order to make 2025 and beyond as bright, bold and disruptive as we can! THE BAD NEWS FIRST You may have heard that St Martins has not received Creative Australia four-year investment funding for the second cycle in a row . We are gutted by this outcome and mourn the fact that in the Theatre Category to which we belong, only one Victorian company was funded.

At St Martins we ensure children are equal owners of the creative process and are recognised as artists in their own right.

Yesterday Nadja and Thomas from St Martins were honoured to attend The Betty Amsden Foundation Annual Gathering where we learned so much more about Betty and her generosity, met other grant recipients, and mingled with trustees including Simon Abrahams and Jeanette Brookes.

Today we celebrated the birthday of Irene Mitchell, the founding member of The Little Theatre which later became St Martins! Irene remained an active supporter of St Martins until she died in 1995, and her legacy of passion, courage, and leadership lives on.
