"To-day I think
Only with scents,– scents dead leaves yield,
And bracken, and wild carrot's seed,
And the square mustard field;

Odours that rise
When the spade wounds the root of tree,
Rose, currant, raspberry, or goutweed,
Rhubarb or celery"
-Edward Thomas from "Digging" (Last Poems, 1918)

Daughter baking up a storm. Blueberry yoghurt cake. Used fresh berries & followed the recipe which said to gently spoon through, but berries still sunk.
Tips?? Put some batter in the bottom of the tin first, then portion berries through remainder?

Sour, crunchy, vinegary Polish dill pickles in Poland or FROM Poland (many brands claim to be Polskie ogórki but are from anywhere but Poland & are not the traditional vinegar, garlic, dill, horseradish brine), & with pretty much anything.

I've read on the internet we don't "need" to salt modern species of eggplant but I still absolutely do, do you?

I often think of the reaction of the first person who threw away their old kernels into the fire to dispose of them.

"...We had gone back & forth all night on the ferry;
And you ate an apple, & I ate a pear,
From a dozen of each we had bought somewhere;
And the sky went wan, & the wind came cold,
And the sun rose dripping, a bucketful of gold."

"no flower ever opened
so staunch a white leaf,
no flower ever parted silver
from such rare silver;

O white pear,
your flower-tufts,
thick on the branch,
bring summer and ripe fruits
in their purple hearts."

-H.D. (Hilda Doolittle 1886-1961), from "Pear Tree"

Baked chicken wings, doing their best beetles impressions, and salad of whatever was to hand, including blueberries.

Super cool when my daughter sends me pics of her baking recipes from my site, especially, as in this case, of her Nanna's recipe 😭😄
This is a take on traditional date & walnut loaf - she used dried apricot, pear & apple. Very versatile.

"staple foodstuffs consumed by both poor & wealthy Egyptians included bread and beer .. often supplemented by green onions, vegetables, lentils, chickpeas, figs, & to a lesser extent meat, game birds, & fish, which considered a luxury #food" 🍜

"ancient Egyptians were especially particular about the type of #food they consumed for two key reasons. The first was to achieve longevity in life, and the second was to prepare for their journey to their eternal life in the afterlife" 🍜

Wouldn't be real without failures.

He wanted pizza. I wanted to use up the ground/mince beef. Battle lines were drawn. I tried a new beef & rice recipe, KNOWING I have yet to successfully cook rice by absorption on the induction (gas so easy).

Mine was...hot.
