The combination of tax rises and giveaways since last year’s Budget means that incomes for households in the bottom half of the distribution rise by 1.0 per cent while incomes for the richer half fall by 0.7 per cent.

This Government has hugely increased public spending, which will have large in-kind benefits for households.

Families across the income distribution will benefit, but poorer households will benefit more as they use public services more, and these represent a larger proportion of their income.

An obvious attempt to undemocratically derail a bill which has already faced more scrutiny than any other private member’s bill in recent history. This is a compassionate, popular reform that the public overwhelmingly supports. Lords should be careful not to undermine the will of the Parliament.
