Talking this morning in the closing session of the international linear collider workshop.
What a lineup 🤩

I arrived at the linear collider workshop, and they really messed up my name badge this time 😅

Dit zal me tenminste niet gebeuren. Ik ben zo een van die fossielen die geen itsme gebruikt.

I just had a tour around the DESY labs where parts of the next trackers (ATLAS and CMS) are being constructed. Amazing setups and professionalism 🤩
Every picture has an enormous amount detail behind it. Super nice to see it in real life (thanks to Elisabetta and Doris 🙏).

This week I'm at the DESY theory workshop "synergies towards the future standard model", talking on LHC measurements and HL-LHC prospects.
Last time I was here was 24y ago 😱 for the SUSY conference.
My talk may not be as inspiring though as Ed Witten's I saw back then as a just started PhD student.

Waiting since an hour on the platform in Essen, maybe 10 more minutes? The platform is quite crowded, so unlikely to have a seat on the next train.
In the mean time, the #DB website is advising me to postpone my travel 🤷🏼
Thankfully, I can kill time playing some chess and restarting a Formosa run.

Luckily the station is just next to the dom, nice distraction 😀

Köln hbf is a mess, the delays are all over the place, the platforms are dangerously overcrowded. At least I am in time for my next train, let's hope it'll make the rdv as well.

On my way to Hamburg to the DESY theory workshop. This time by train, I have the time for the long journey. First stop Liège, next Köln. Hoping for a smooth connection, but at least this train is in time!

Today the Belgian high energy physics community gathers in Brussels for a day of review with the RECFA panel, the European committee for future accelerators. Exciting to take stock of past achievements and future opportunities.

Sunny in Brussels, nice to get a splendid view on Mont Blanc on the way 🤩

All smooth, and raining cats and dogs upon arrival in Milano. I hope the luggage isn't drenched...
I only realized this a little before traveling, but Air China, unlike European companies, flies the straight route over Russia 😬

Boarded three first plane. In this airplane, all window blinds must be closed. There's a satellite launch site nearby, you see. I could take a nice picture from the airport building though.
Ready to fly 🛫

Next week, the LHC will do a test with very high bunch charge, at high luminosity conditions.
In the plans from our run coordination: _average_ PU ~ 132 😱
Note: the LHC design was a PU of ~ 25

About the underground lab, check the plot below why you want to be deep (here under 2400m of rock): the background from the cosmic ray muon flux is tiny!

Yesterday's outing to the Jinping underground laboratory (deepest! largest!) was concluded with a visit to the Jinping-I dam (highest!).
Impressive^2!
Note the #CMS t-shirt 😁
