I’m interested in WW1, particularly the Battle of the Frontiers (22/08/1914) and am a member of the Great War Group and Western Front Association. Outside of military history I like cycling and rugby

#FWWhist #History #1GM #FWW #Grande-Guerre #WW1 110 years after his execution, last week I had chance to pay my respects to Charles Goulard, the “missionnaire” dropped by a young Guynemer (his first “mission spéciale”)

His younger brother Helmut was KIA 22/8/14: buried at Virton Bellevue Franco-Allemand military cemetery. We visited his grave with @alexchurchill.bsky.social and @istoriatravel.bsky.social this August

#FWWhist #History #1GM #FWW #Grande-Guerre #WW1 Another one KIA 22/8/14 who never got to see his elder brother achieve fame. Lothar von Arnauld de la Perriere was the most successful U-boat commander ever.

#FWWhist #History #1GM #FWW #Grande-Guerre #WW1 Arnd never lived to see his eldest brother become famous. His other brother Rudi was also killed in 1914. Paul would name his own two sons after his fallen brothers. Sadly both were KIA early in WW2 too

Looking forward to presenting this on Thursday. Don’t worry, it’s not about an early no smoking campaign but the defence of the village of Fumay on the River Meuse in August 1914 😇 @thegreatwargroup.bsky.social

I’m not sure it’s a Belgian thing, there’s nothing on their website or in the local paper. Still, who needs an excuse, every day’s an Orval day 😇 PS I think your nearest “Ambassador” Is Houblon

#FWWhist #History #1GM #FWW #Grande-Guerre #WW1 There are many original wooden grave markers from the Western Front in English churches but this is unusual: an original German one for a French soldier (Les Bulles 🇧🇪)

There are many military memorials in York Minster but visitors often miss the 2nd Division one in the adjacent Dean’s Park

Remembering those killed in the fighting at Bure, Ardenne, 80 years ago. Armoured support was provided by the Fife & Forfar Yeomanry (well documented in @peterhart.bsky.social ‘s “Burning Steel”)
