I don’t know if there’s ever been a moment of 100% perfect disaster in the theater, but accidentally blowing hundreds of pages of rejected rewrites of your play into the audience during first preview has to be a contender.

There was a horrifying moment —I had written in the Council of Principalities scene that there was a rain of paper that falls constantly. Oskar had decided that we would have this thing up in the flies-he found a paper sorting machine that would throw pages of paper. Where are we going to get the paper? Somebody on stage management had this great idea: There were these bins of rewrites of Perestroika, these recycling bins, with hundreds of thousands of sheets with all the rewrites. Let's just load it up with that. The Taper is a thrust stage with an air-conditioning system. We had never tested it before, so we did it for the first time during first preview. And it starts sending out these things. And they don't fall down, because they're paper. They start going out into the audience. And they are rewrites of the fucking scenes. People were not having it. They were literally picking up the rewrites and passing them around and I just thought, This is it. This is my big chance, and I've completely destroyed it.
