We have had for decades calculators, spreadsheets, programming languages that do math efficiently even on tiny processors. Even if it worked, using text based AI in giant data centres for that is like using a 747 to pick up the groceries. It's insane.

My grandfather WHL Watson served in a Cycle Corps 1915-1917, and published a series of articles entitled "Tales of a Gaspipe Officer" until the censor stopped him. Cyclists were referred to as the Gaspipe Cavalry because the frame tubes resembled gaspipes.

The BBC is a complex organisation containing many people with different views and biases and levels of competency. But this looks like the BBC is being beaten up on the basis of a report compiled by an ex-Murdoch hack who has cherry-picked a few mistakes to suit a right wing agenda

Money is power; power corrupts. That's why the existence of the super-rich is incompatible with democracy.

A-. The future can be less bad than it would otherwise be if we work hard to change it. Much irreparable harm has already been done. But if we can throw out fossil fuel fascism, we have a chance to bottom out and feel hope again.

I remember hearing the same about automation in the '70s. Turned out everyone had to work harder than ever, but mostly at bullshit jobs.

You don't get to be a “modern party facing the future" by failing to recognise that physics cares nothing for consensus.

Of course he didn't make money, he obtained it. Somehow, the idea that money manipulators create wealth has been baked into our language.

My understanding is, his payout is conditional on the share price in 10 years time. I agree about the workers.

Windows 10 de-support is a prime example. Hundreds of millions of working computers worldwide are now obsolete because Microsoft made Win11 incompatible with older machines.

But while companies might not literally disable their stuff, all they had to do was stop supporting it and we were stuffed. Like when Ferranti went bust in '93 leaving us with an unsupported pathology system. 2/2

30+ years ago, working in the NHS I designed a system that did just that for 3000+ Windows 3.1 PCs in a major London hospital. Support staff could plug in a PC, type a command and it would be ready with apps installed for ward staff to use in minutes. 1/2
