On the one hand, it makes me sad that Pat Metheny Group's "The Way Up" was their last album. On the other, every time I hear it I'm reminded that it was, hands down, their magnum opus, and I was incredibly lucky to be in the live audience when they recorded the DVD in South Korea.

The weirdest normalcy is watching us fall, slow-motion, into another dark age while more information than we could possibly consume in multiple lifetimes is available to us instantly. We democratized access to information, but never fully democratized how to think critically about that information.

Digital infrastructure is a lot like physical infrastructure in that most people don't even think about it until something actually goes wrong. And then, when it *does* go wrong, the public suddenly discovers how large, complex, and political the problems are, with no quick, armchair solutions.

I would argue this is because we are told to be proud of the bullshit, and that other countries are “jealous” of our bullshit, rather than being taught that we have a responsibility to our neighbors our, and our communities, to live and act as if that bullshit could become actual reality.
Not to be a corny doomer but what really weighs on me is that for all that red white and blue bullshit about freedom I heard bellowed out of everything my whole life, that's something you actually have to want and protect, and in the aggregate we just don't seem to

I was a kid in the tail end of the Reagan era, and was deeply indoctrinated into the "Moral Majority" era of Evangelicalism. (Coincidentally, the last era that E's had this much political prominence)
