Driving is dirty, dangerous, selfish, and expensive, and there are myriad better ways for people to move around their lives if we would only give them the chance.

It’s blowing my mind that schools, universities, public services would run headlong into this. We spent 15 years documenting black boxes. This is a black box in a black hole!
I don't understand how anyone can watch how blatantly Grok is manipulated to answer the way ownership desires it to and then act like the other LLM chatbots couldn't possibly be similarly but less obviously compromised to produce responses in whatever way corporate interests and priorities dictate.

“”AI” is a failed technology. … LLMs haven’t met any markers of success we’d apply to, well, literally any other technology.” Great article by Ethan Marcotte @ethanmarcotte.com

Republicans understand that the best way to kill social programs is to paint their beneficiaries as Black, as support for these programs declines — even amongst white people who need them — when they think large numbers of Black people will benefit.

Such a perfect example of what we all give up when we refuse to address basic inequalities. I don't want to live in a country where all the public space is militarized to keep hungry people from stealing food, just give them money to buy food!

I hope this is becoming widespread here. Thinking of the landscapes taken this week and how many may not know where they’re at risk.
Chicagoans are starting to do exactly this.

OpenAI put out a press release today addressing mental health concerns. I have many issues with it, but something super troubling:

They estimate a WEEKLY prevalence of 560,000 users displaying signs of psychosis or mania and 1.2 MILLION users indicating suicidal plan/intent.

I sat down and tried to really break down the AI economy in tech startups, and I think it illuminates a lot of the phenomena we see on the ground!
Why are so many companies just slapping a chatbot on their product and calling it innovation? @stephaniekirmer.com's new article explains how market analysts and the need for visible "AI-ness" are driving superficial implementations.

the actual story here, which the media never talks about, is that police in this country have become a discrete right-wing political operation. the story isn't about cops leaving (they're lying about that), it's about the police trying to exert influence over elections.
Lmao is this supposed to be a bad thing?

It’d be a mistake to take Conway’s comments as anything other than disingenuous, but it’s worth noting that his back-of-the-napkin estimate is wildly off. O’Hare alone, which wouldn’t be part of the program, takes up 5% of the city’s area. Then there are dozens of square miles of industrial areas.
@aldconway.bsky.social, a billionaire’s son, can’t imagine spending $40 million (0.2% of the budget) on sidewalk snow plowing, an essential service that would help every Chicagoan especially disabled people, parents, and seniors. Oh, and police misconduct has cost $231.2 million in 2025 already.
