One thing I always want to ask these masculinity entrepreneurs is why men can’t look to women as role models, and can’t see in women models of human virtue and thriving that are worth emulating. After all, women look to men for these all the time.

If 2023 was the year AI slop was embraced by spammers and social media influencers, and 2024 was the year the slop era began in earnest, 2025 was when slop became embedded in our cultural institutions and social spheres.

On the slop layer that we all must navigate now:
Lost in the slop layer
How AI has encrusted our culture and social sphere in a sedimentary layer of slop.

I know a lot of people say liberals can’t win in Ohio because of housing costs but I think a better theory is that liberals can’t win in Ohio because they say things like THIS
we don't have a national housing crisis, we just have a crisis of housing in the parts of the country that are worth living in

The Epstein story gets a something that is tearing at the heart of the electorate: elite impunity. The idea that wealthy and powerful people can do terrible things *at scale* and face no consequences for them. Whatever political party actually stops it could rule the country for a generation.

One of the writers best explaining Trumpism right now is not a full-time writer, but @donmoyn.bsky.social, an academic and professor. The Times should give him a column. But for now, you can read his great stuff via his newsletter. Another sharp piece here.

It is an attitude that sometimes extends even into academia: there's a dramatic, sometimes almost petulant determination to undervalue *effective* written communication as compared to the research and raw ideas being communicated.

But effective communication is both hard and important.

Oh, this is a good topic!

There is an element of 'consent' to pitched battles, but it's not the old myth of generals agreeing to have a battle before tea time.

And to the question - a better Roman general would presumably have refused battle at a place like Cannae.

But let's talk about it. 1/
I don't think I really understand "pitched battle." It was once common that opposing armies agreed upon, or knowingly converged upon, a specified battleground?

Polybius says the Romans engaged at Cannae because of inexperience. Would experienced leaders ever agree to the same battle conditions?
