America is beautiful, contradictory, unfinished. I am proud of our country even as we constantly strive to make it better, to protect and deepen our democracy, to fulfill its promise for each and every person who calls it home.

Happy Independence Day. No Kings in America.

Wrote a thing (with @jakehigdon.com). Congress is killing IRA tax credits in an effort to look "tough on China." But the effect will be the exact opposite.
"In the end we will cede not only our supply chains to China, but also our competitive edge in the race for AI and manufacturing dominance."

Former DOE staffers @azevin.bsky.social and @jakehigdon.com argue that the Senate megabill will hand energy dominance to China ⬇️
The GOP Megabill Is Playing Right Into China’s Hands
Two former Department of Energy staffers argue from experience that severe foreign entity restrictions aren’t the way to reshore America’s clean energy supply chain.

An observation from this paper is that because of the tariffs on solar from China, the United States already has relatively lower carbon solar supply chains. Shifting towards low carbon solar supply chains in other parts of the world would be even more significant. iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1...
Do low carbon solar supply chains make a difference in meeting greenhouse gas reduction targets? At what cost? 🚨 Our new paper led by @briantarrojaphd.bsky.social w/Rebecca Peer and @gruberte.bsky.social #energysky #greensky #energysky ☀️🔋🔌💡 #ultralowcarbonsolar
1/ Been holding back re: research since everything is on fire, but that's not changing anytime soon so might as well post:

We plan decarbonized electricity systems to minimize monetary cost. How different would they look if we minimized life cycle GHG instead?

Inflation Reduction Act repeal would deeply damage the US economy, costing us $50 billion in exports + handing $66 billion in investments to other nations like China.

No wonder America's biggest companies + Republican politicians are pushing back. Me on @forbes.com

For those following debates over net metering, this is definitely worth a read - key CA’s state analysis of the ‘cost shift’ from solar are way off. Great explanation of the issues and what is at stake from @jeffstjohn.bsky.social
Does rooftop solar actually help Californians at large save money on electricity? A new study tears apart a state agency’s claim that rooftop solar caused an $8.5B ‘cost shift’ in 2024. In fact, it found, rooftop solar actually saved Californians $2.3B this year: www.canarymedia.com/articles/sol...
California’s rooftop solar is a benefit, not a cost, to the state
A new study finds rooftop solar will save California $2.3B this year — a rebuttal to the ‘cost-shift’ math that’s led regulators to stifle solar growth.
