Bonus Issue to Watch: New Weather and Climate Disaster Database Shows Rising Costs. Subscribe to Legally Speaking for more! New analysis shows that the first half of 2025 was the most expensive ever recorded for weather and climate disasters in the country. In the first six months of 2025, 14 distinct billion-dollar disasters have occurred in the United States, totaling over $100 billion in damages. A climate science organization, Climate Central, published the results last week along with the launch of their new database that tracks weather disasters where damages/costs reached $1 billion. The research was previously housed at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), but funding for it was cut earlier this year. The former lead scientist on the dataset at NOAA is now leading the Climate Central database.

"The endangerment finding is about as non-controversial as it gets. It is the foundation for federal regulation of greenhouse gas emissions from motor vehicles, and without it, Connecticut’s air quality will deteriorate, and Connecticut residents – particularly those with asthma and other respiratory diseases – will suffer." Connecticut Attorney General William Tong "As Washington battles wildfires and the nation swelters under extreme heat, Donald Trump and his EPA want to gut the rules regulating harmful climate pollution. The endangerment finding that EPA wants to undo is a sound, science-based finding that greenhouse gases ‘endanger the public health and public welfare of current and future generations.’" Washington Attorney General Nick Brown
