It's easier to imagine season two's Adar coming to the conclusion that he needs to recruit Galadriel to help him defeat Sauron, and having the capacity to be both cunning and charming as he goes about doing so. It would've been interesting to see Mawle's approach to this plotline.

I greatly enjoyed Joseph Mawle's performance as Adar, whom he made my favorite original character in this series. But without his departure, I may never have discovered the immensely talented Sam Hazeldine and his extensive body of work.

To take my mind off reality, I've continued my Sam Hazeldine film festival this week by watching Riot on Redchurch Street & The War Below. The former is a bizarre film that I have no desire to see again, the latter a touching war movie that left me weeping (but I nonetheless watched again tonight).

I can draw animals fairly well, too, real & otherwise. Here are some of the Tolkien/fantasy inspired pictures I made in my teens (circa 1984-86). I often regret not pursuing an art career; I might've been a matte painter for the film industry if I had. Science seemed like a safer choice at the time.

With Rey, it was her solitude and how she managed it, and her inherent empathy, that I identified with. The introductory scenes of her had parallels to how I was living at the time of the film's release, and to my isolation in my teenage years. I actually wept when I first saw it.

Same for me. I could identify with both Ben Solo and Rey. It pissed me off when people referred to Kylo as just an overly sensitive emo-kid. Mental illness runs in families (including mine), and it was obvious to me that Ben inherited more than just a high M-count from his grandfather.

As the blood moon eclipse begins, I thought about Adar saying how Sauron gave him "wine, as red as a blood moon." And I was attempting to find a video clip of that scene when I came across mention of a month in the Jewish calendar called Adar, and the significance of a blood moon during this time.

In two consecutive series now, one in each of my favorite realms, the character I became emotionally attached to the most was killed in a terrible manner. I obviously need to remain more detached in the future (at least until the series concludes). 😕
