St George’s Church, Donnington, West Sussex.
.. a Saxon church set in fields surrounded by farmland. A church has been here since before AD966, the current Grade I listed building dates from the 13th century. Its wonderful rural location is a home for bats, swifts, and barn owls. Perfect. #photo

Hunston Junction, Chichester Canal, West Sussex.
Hunston is a village between Chichester and the sea. By its little bridge JMW Turner made his famous painting, in 1828, of a sailing ship reflected in the canal, with the distant Chichester Cathedral steeple across the fields.

treeline in a line
Meon Valley, Hampshire.
We have plenty of trees here in the valley; marking boundaries, copses clinging to hillsides, and the Forest of Bere, an ancient hunting ground. Fun Fact: There’s an estimated 3 trillion trees on Earth, that’s about 400 trees per person.

a kings famous failure
Bosham Harbour, West Sussex.
It was here in 1016 that King Canute commanded the waves to go back, he failed … as planned! Tired of flattery by locals he made this demonstration to prove he was not a God.

micro climates
Meon Valley, Hampshire.
Out walking the valley at this time of year I’m not just looking at sun and shade, but sun and frost. There’s permanently shaded places that can stay frozen all day, whilst in others even the slight cold sun clears the ground early morning.

tree tunnel
The Halnaker Tree Tunnel, South Downs, West Sussex.
.. a magical pathway formed by centuries of foot traffic, a unique walking experience. The tunnel is part of Mill Lane, which follows the historic route of Stane Street, a Roman road that connected London to Chichester.

cathedral footpath : Winchester, Hampshire.
Winchester Cathedral is surrounded by its own grounds unbothered by city traffic. One of the approaches is from Great Minster Street along the footpath under a tree lined canopy of branches.

circular settlement?
Meon Valley, Hampshire, England.
The lay of the land can often be read like a book; there’s a lot of history written by the hedgerows. But no history mystery today, just visual trickery.

The colour of autumn. Why do the leaves turn gold in autumn? It’s the breakdown of chlorophyll, the pigment that gives leaves their green colour. As the days get shorter and cooler, the trees stop producing chlorophyll. This causes the leaves to lose their green hue and turn golden brown.

new steps on the old hill
St Catherine's Hill, Iron Age Hillfort, Winchester, Hampshire, England.
The worn stairway up the hill has been replaced; a 67m (220ft) climb, 1000 boards, 120 sleepers. A fragile chalk monument, no diggers allowed, it's all hand-built (photo from half way up) #photography
