I'm so sorry for your loss. I just lost my 13 year old dog some months ago and then her brother from the same litter is in late stage congestive heart disease. I totally feel for you. Just know that you're doing the right thing for him when you must.

As the aircraft burns fuel and becomes lighter, it can climb to higher altitudes to maintain optimal efficiency, known as a "staircase" climb - if the air traffic control, ATC, stays out of its way.
Note: I'm not a pilot, but I have certainly taught aerodynamics classes as physicist/mathematician.

But probably the biggest factor is the air density and drag reduction at higher altitudes. The entire aircraft is designed, once its flight surfaces are "cleaned up", to operate at 35 to 40,000 feet most efficiently, where it gets its work done every day.

Modern turbofans are optimized for high altitude where their thermal efficiency increases due operating closer to design point w/ higher turbine inlet temperatures and compressor pressure ratios leading large reduction in thrust-specific fuel consumption (TSFC), improving overall fuel efficiency.

The fuel consumption would be psychotic. I'm surprised the airline would even do that. That flight cost them 50 times as much. It's amazing they didn't cancel it.
