-being like “man if only I could have had a crack at editing this novel before it was published, we could have saved 40 pages of the reader’s time”

-being completely unable to edit one’s own rambling mess of a novel

As an incorrigible contrarian, I have avoided Sally Rooney’s novels until this week, when I started Normal People. I pushed through a third of it and DNF’d. Bored & couldn’t make myself care about the characters. Do I try another book or am I going to feel the same about any of them?

Luigi Mangione’s got an interesting to read list! Lots of books about healing back pain, probably relevantly

As I open what feels like the 74th food recall email this season, I anxiously await the return of my urban soil sample test. Gods help those without safe food or garden access in the next 4 years.

As I’ve started bluntly saying to people, keep your eating disorder to yourself.
Some things not to comment on this Christmas:

- someone’s weight
- someone’s size
- how much they are eating
- how little they are eating
- the speed they are eating
- the type of foods they are eating
- the times they are eating
- your post Christmas diet
- how fat you feel

Something went wrong with evolution with how many apex predators look cute to human beings. Bears? Wolves?? Lions??? Are you kidding me? We’re not supposed to want to pet something so fluffy??

Assuming all fanfiction is written poorly really just shows you've never been caught in the chokehold of a 150k slowburn that changed the course of your life at 2:40am written by someone whose username has 4 Zs in it and they only wrote one fic and then vanished like an ethereal legend.

If you’re enough of a mess your disorganized attachment style can make you avoid even the fictional people you created in your own head. Too many pages written recently; we’ve gotten too close, need some space for awhile bye maybe you can finish your story on your own idk

It really is wild that sometimes in the office I'll dissociate for a minute like the climate is changing in a scary way and we're being overtaken by a dangerous regime and we're on the brink of another pandemic then I just kind of have to shake myself out of it because I need to send this work email

Seriously, why has no one been talking about this?! These days it’s extremely rare for me to go out to eat and be like “wow, that was good!”. Ordering Grubhub feels like a particularly aggressive act of masochism. The overpriced food was mid even before it got cold and soggy on the way here.
Is it just me or is a lot of restaurant/fast food mid now? Food doesn’t seem to be as good as it used to be.

The amount of AI fanworks/fanarts/fan videos I'm seeing on social media today is crazy
People started saying "Okay but THIS use of AI is actually good, we should use AI to only make this fan content"

I'M MORE THAN DISAPPOINTED

Imma need some of you to think about thriving out of spite. I had big plans for 2025 and I’m definitely not gonna pre-derail them for likes of Elin and Tromp. I’m getting more involved. Loving harder. Writing hornier. Having more fun. I’m gonna be so kind to my neighbors, bitch.

4 novels, all same universe, each based on one of my real ancestors, each MC given one or more of my absolute worst character flaws and sent down 300 pgs to fix it. (Sorry to any ancestors I misidentified as the source of something wrong w/ me). I may suck at writing but at least I got that down.
This is how you become a writer: just pick one of the things that is deeply wrong with you. Make it a character. Now send it on a self-help journey or try to kill it. Now call it a book.

“(City officials) urged residents to use less water by taking shorter showers, report leaky fire hydrants, flush the toilet only when necessary and sweep driveways rather than power-washing them.”
NEW: Mayor Eric Adams on Monday declared a drought warning and paused a years-long project to repair a leak in the Delaware Aqueduct.

As of Monday, the upstate reservoirs that provide NYC’s drinking water were at 60% capacity, about 19% less than normal.

This is the first I’ve seen evacuations for wildfires in this region. There was also a brushfire in my neighborhood in Queens last night. We desperately need rain in the NYC area. I can’t believe that we’re going to have climate change deniers in charge of environmental policy and everything else.

Reminder: Writing a novel and writing a query letter require two different skill sets. One is marketing and strategy while the other is storytelling AND writers sometimes are too far in the woods to see their story effectively to pitch it. It’s okay to seek out help! #writers #querying #mswl

If moving to the woods to make candles were a live option I would promise to never put any more of this garbage onto a page again.
Stuck on a writing project? Here's what I always ask myself in that situation: Emily, have you considered that you might not be very good and should abandon writing altogether and move to the woods and make candles or possibly become a nun or something?
