Just in case BlueSky gets nuked or neutered… find me on Mastodon here:

I live in a cold, wet, remote region. I could fly out of here (most people here do). Instead I take 7 hour bus rides. They’re pleasant, cheap & I see the countryside.

My partial solution is that people should fly on jets a whole lot less than they do. Seems reasonable to prevent civilizational collapse. Doesn’t have to be all or nothing.

What do you suggest? Business as usual is going to upend the entire planet, including the ability of well-off folks to travel around by jet. Something has to give - what do you think it is? Or perhaps you don’t accept that human civilization is on a collision course with atmospheric physics?

I definitely used to think of overland travel as “taking too long”. But that’s part of how I rearranged my way of thinking & living. Now when I travel (& I do still travel quite a bit!) I don’t think of trains & buses as taking too long. I think of those modes as being part of the travel adventure.

I’m wondering what you might be able to do yourself to fly less frequently?
November 11, 2025 at 4:55 PM
I have gone to both places, frequently traveling to or thru Paris. But now rarely. I miss traveling through and to Western Europe, and I did lose some things I used to love & enjoy, people I used to spend time with, and career opportunities. But I rearranged my life over time to avoid most flying.

I propose to not travel between Dublin and Paris as frequently as people do now.

Most flights aren’t really necessary.

We all need to change how we live if we want Paris and Dublin to continue existing. A +3C world probably won’t support anything like our current civilization.

I also used to focus on all ways to fly around the world as easily as possible. But the growing realization that jet travel is a source of permanent climate damage that is mostly unnecessary made me change. I encourage other frequent flyers to pledge to fly less here:

Actually I did not know that!! Used to be Verizon I think. I will look into that and register my thoughts with Credo (I’m a customer)

“Credo mobile” is a progressive mobile phone service company. They give a fraction of their revenue to progressive groups every month.

Agree. But I also think professional spectator sports is a societal ill.

We must hound these fascists, never let them back into society, force them into jail cells, courtrooms and prison terms.

OK. But we (and candidates and campaigns) should still defend human rights, including the rights of trans people. Not because it wins or loses. But because it is ethically right.

Painful. But perhaps an opportunity to face the fact that in order to keep our home planet livable for humans, we must all fly a lot less. Jet emissions are rising fast, are caused by a small & wealthy fraction of humanity, and are mostly unnecessary.

Pledge here:
