I discovered this excellent USGS paper "The Divining Rod" (1917). It was a well known useless (and sometimes fraudulent) tool back then, and also widely criticized in the 1600s when it was first mentioned. It's not that ancient, but it's always been disputed. pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/0416/rep...

There is, again, hype going around about a space rock destroying Sodom and Gomorrah. The evidence is poor but well publicized by the few proponents.

Science doesn't work by popularity contest. Validation isn't judged by the excitement factor.

I saw a recent video from Dave O the Science Pro on a Miami Fox News station talking about earthquake lights. He was off base - a meteorologist, not a geologist. Media scientists who reach beyond their areas of expertise end up misinforming people badly. (Example: Michio Kaku)
