Bicycle racer Kittie Knox was the first African-American to become a member of the League of American Wheelmen. Knox raced despite sometimes being denied access to races, restaurants, and hotels, and was known for her baggy trousers as well as her cycling ability.

Tonight we had to walk by that deadly Canal St. crossing at the foot of the Manhattan Bridge, which I've always hated taking my kid across because it's like taking your life into your hands. It was... normal. No cars blocking the intersection. When the light changed, we were safe to cross.
