Very true! I often put interesting/difficult/insight-requiring questions in my unit review package. That's when the students are most motivated to push themselves. That's really when the learning happens. The assessment and the grades are just a game we all play because it's expected.

Many students I teach lack the number sense to "adjust". I tell those students to start with 1 and c, test the sum, then try 2 and c/2, etc. Eventually they develop their own approach.
