🧵This 58-year-old nurse from Maryland is seen being violently dragged along the ground by officials in Ghana.

Trump deported her there.

This abhorrent & disgusting abuse of a woman who saved American lives and cared for injured and ill Americans for 30 years.

All the details below are worse.
Woman deported from Maryland shown on video being dragged in Ghana
Rabbiatu Kuyateh was detained this summer at her annual ICE check-in, her son said. She moved to the D.C. area 30 years ago as she fled civil war in Sierra Leone.

Every few months now I re-read this "Who Goes Nazi?" piece from 1941 and am blown away by how it captures the people we are dealing with 80 years later.

Nobody cares about the victims in the Dallas ICE shooting apparently. The first I've heard about one of them was on CNN today. He's fighting for his life in the hospital --- he was brought to the US when he was 13. He's 33 now. No criminal record.

I just don't know what to say anymore.

what I didn’t expect was the depth and speed of the capitulation at every level

it's easy to look past these when there were much larger tragedies to come in its darkest years, but something that would be recorded, from Jewish exiles to German intellectuals who simply made enemies with the regime, is how many people died in crude desolation because the stress became too much.

Lives entirely ruined. Careers thrown entirely to the wind. You were running a successful publishing house in Hamburg but, in little over a year, are now in total financial ruin, alone in some foreign country. You can't get a job because no one needs a German publisher in America. You're nobody.

We're witnessing the most aggressive, fanatical crackdown on free speech in my lifetime. The speed and breadth of government censorship and private sector and nonprofit capitulation has been astonishing. As has the lack of urgency/silence from people who've long claimed to care about this stuff.

Murdering people on a boat because of allegations that they are criminals isn't acceptable
Acts of political violence aren’t acceptable. Non-political school shootings aren’t acceptable. Sacking the legislature isn’t acceptable. Military occupation of peaceful American cities isn’t acceptable. Abductions conducted in courthouse hallways by masked agents of the state aren’t acceptable.

reactive politics is so ineffectual!! a crisis calls for *shaping* public opinion
This memo is being sent to Democratic leaders/elites,
arguing that directly attacking Trump's deployment of the National Guard in DC is politically unwise. It encourages the use of terms like distraction and stunt. (I am not endorsing this kind of thinking at all. ) www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/bz9d8...

The notion that resistance to authoritarianism should be comfortable and painless is a substantial reason why we have been so ineffective in resisting it.
The entire point of taking moral stands in defense against totalitarianism is that we have to be willing to bear the costs that come from the courage of our convictions.

I’m not remotely suggesting we stop research, but we maybe consider whether to refuse traveling to schools for academic events.
Indeed. And when they come for Georgia State you will find that your moral positioning will become infinitely more complicated and agonizing as you look at the students who will be forced from your institution, the research trials that are stopped, the career educators pushed out of their jobs...

I mean, yes, it often is hard and unpleasant to take a moral stand against evil.

Does this mean it’s inherently unfair and rude to encourage people to do so?

We are under a fascist regime, which albeit hasn't fully consolidated control over an extremely large and technologically advanced country, and it would be dangerously foolish to wait for an imaginary checklist to be completed before accepting this truth.
Yeah I really dislike the genre of post which is like "trump has done something very bad, therefore we live under a totalitarian regime" like the very fact that you're posting that without fear of consequences is proof that we are not (yet). Engage with the harms as they actually exist
It’s an anocracy. Trump hasn’t consolidated authoritarian control. If he did, he’d be able to carry out his desire to crush all mass protest with overwhelming force. There wouldn’t be No Kings protests all over the county, with little difficulty.

But his aims are clear and the rule of law, broken.

Popular narrative proposes that the only way to defeat Nazis is by not confronting them or even naming them until the exact right perfect strategic future moment, a moment that is never defined or sought. It's an unwatchful anticipation designed to forestall the slightest meaningful action.
