In a complete inversion of the expected ecological dynamic, cats gotta outnumber mice on the board by about three to one or you're gonna have a bad time.

I started to compose an explanation of the concept of cause and effect, caught myself, and added them to the appropriate blocklist instead. I'm learning!

The number one cause of death for American children is firearms.

Our Moloch | Garry Wills
The gun is our Moloch. We sacrifice children to him daily—sometimes, as at Sandy Hook, by directly throwing them into the fire-hose of bullets from our protected private killing machines, sometimes by...

All the right wingers are parroting this, but none are quoting Slotkin's actual words. I went digging and couldn't figure out what any of it is referring to. Safe to just assume it's made up?

I wonder how much the fares actually net as a percentage of the budget when you subtract the cost of enforcement and collection (including whatever cut Clipper/Cubic gets).

No.

The fact that you expected anyone to come out swinging in defense of historical genocide is telling.

I'm sure it looked perfect to RFK.

This is a billboard in my neighborhood that I also had to look up, and this one is real. 🤮

There's another one (same company but different ad) at Bayshore and Chavez. I had to look it up to be sure it was satire since the real thing is frequently beyond the pale.

You can also come up with your own scheme, but I spent a couple of weeks trying to figure out the most logical relative positions of cooking, gardening, travel, geography, history, etc before deciding "I'm okay letting someone else think about this for me".

Remember that libraries are often spread out too. One plus of Dewey was that I could designate one bookcase as 000-299, another as 300-499, etc, so the shelves themselves are cleanly partitioned. The shelf by the kitchen is 600-699 because that range includes cookbooks.

it's way past spooky season, why are you trying to give me nightmares
November 22, 2025 at 8:57 PM
I did exactly this about a decade ago, reasoning that I wanted nonfiction grouped by subject rather than author, with related subjects close to each other, and I didn't want to spend a lot of time dithering about how precisely to categorize each book. Dewey Decimal to the rescue!

I clipped it out of the newspaper the day it ran and had it taped to the wall of my childhood bedroom until I moved out.

I imagine she'll make plenty of money on wingnut welfare.

I'd rather go back to having professional cabbies and more reliable public transit, but having lived with them for a few years now, Waymos are at least a marginal upgrade from Uber drivers skidding onto sidewalks while poking at their phones.

All the weird/inconsistent behavior sort of makes sense if viewed through the lens of "our biological imperative is to make everyone as happy as possible", including the fact that they suffer when Carol is unhappy...

I agree that its behavior doesn't make sense from an evolutionary perspective but I'm not sure bioweapon is the right fit for the curve. My current theory is that it's the result of someone telling an AI genie to maximize the amount of happiness in the universe.

Anthropic's theory, which I don't quite agree with but can understand, is that the torment nexus is inevitable because the market hungers for a nexus, and so the best option is to make a nexus that contains marginally less torment.
