Mobile networks want to use the satellite airwaves we need to track climate change
At next year’s World Radiocommunications Conference (WRC-25), governments will face a choice that goes to the heart of how we monitor our warming planet. Some regulators are wondering whether to open part of the X-band — the 8.025–8.4 GHz range used by Earth observation satellites — to 5G and 6G mobile networks. Several major telecom operators have been pushing for this move, arguing that they could use this spectrum more efficiently and pay countries handsomely for the right to do so.

Welcome, Jared Isaacman
Welcome, Jared Isaacman. We who love NASA, or at least the idea of NASA, wish you the very best in taking leadership of the great American space agency. You seem to be an agent for change and NASA sorely needs that. Its human spaceflight program, which garners most of its public attention and financial support, is dysfunctional (unsustainable as in an earlier incarnation of a failed initiative) governed more by industry contracts and special-interest politics than by any space exploration or national purpose goal.

Japan Rising: Tokyo-Based Axelspace is Making Microsatellites with a Big Impact
Japan is a lion in kittens’ clothing. In both land area and population, it pales in comparison to the likes of the United States, China, India, Brazil, and Russia. In influence, significance, and impact, however, it consistently punches above its weight. In fact, Japan’s economy is the world’s fourth largest, according to the International Monetary Fund, which says the country’s GDP is a massive $4.28 trillion—despite a shrinking population and a paucity of natural resources.
