This storm is highlighting our lack of capability. Our two spacecraft capable of real-time solar wind monitoring are struggling. ACE's plasma detector is giving clearly WRONG data, while DSCOVR is known to give unreliable values.

SWFO, hurry up!

This looks like it could be a big one! Look to the skies this evening.... But now that I've said that, I've jinxed it.

Find a No Kings protest Saturday and go!

Don't worry that you've never been to a protest before. Don't worry about being dressed wrong or looking out of place. Don't worry that you don't agree about everything -- or even about much -- with lots of people at the protest.

Greatly enjoyed this seminar by Dr. Jesse Woodroffe. Some human-space environment effects discussed that I hadn't thought about at all, including human-generated VLF radio signals being detected in space and potentially scattering particles!

I am *very* excited for SWFO. High quality, real-time L1 data is the current cornerstone of space weather monitoring, and we've been struggling with that recently.

1. In the immediate aftermath of Charlie Kirk's shooting, the WSJ laundered claims that "transgender symbols" were found with the shooter's gun.

Now, a press conference reveals that NO such symbols were found.

WSJ owes a full retraction and apology.

Press Conference: No "Transgender" Or "LGBTQ" Symbols Found At Kirk's Shooting
Yesterday, several media outlets claimed or strongly implied that "transgender symbols" were found at the scene of the gun used by Charlie Kirk's shooter. This turned out to be false.

Kicking off an international conference in Italy by listening to warnings about travel complications in the host nation of the next meeting: the United States.

We're being warned about searches, visa problems, and other actions that visitors may be subjected to while in the US.

This sucks.

Very unfortunate storm in the end. The magnetic field of the storm was predominantly northward- meaning it could not effectively transmit energy to the Earth system, preventing the aurora from moving southward.

BOOOO!

Isle Royal (very near Canada!) is showing some color, but it's pretty diffuse right now. The storm isn't cooperating for us mid-latitude/lower Michigan folks right now. :(

Storm is here! Solar wind speed is ~675 which might not be enough to push things south enough for us Michiganders. Magnetic field is yet to cooperate, but it's still early...
September 1, 2025 at 9:37 PM
YES!

Now before we all start reposting pseudo science craziness, let's get some speed estimates and remember that southward oriented magnetic field is important for creating aurora (and other "fun" effects) at Earth. In other words, it's going to be a bit before we know if we should be excited.
Full halo CME. This thing is headed for Earth. Let’s await agency models for arrival time and potential geomagnetic storm watches.

I will be summarizing this event with my opinion on aurora possibilities in a email to my subscribers over the coming days: go.theauroraguy.com/alerts
