here’s the last part of my artist statement
We do not, unfortunately, have the character count here for the impassioned defense I would like to give of fanfic as a method for engaging deeply with a text, a fundamentally altruistic and anticapitalist endeavor where free art is shared with a community, and a tool for marginalized people to claim space for themselves within corporate-owned media narratives which erase or overlook their existence; but a brief history of the Kirk/Spock shippers is important here. Women and queer people who watched Star Trek: The Original Series as a love story between Captain Kirk and his first officer Spock built the entire infrastructure of what we now consider modern fandom from the 1960s onward (fanfic, fan art, zines, conventions, cosplay and more). And they're still around! My online fanfic community ranges from cishet Midwestern grandmas in their 70s to trans college students in Europe, and every age, background and nationality in between. The library of works is vast, and the caliber of writing can exceed a many published novels; but that's only half the story. You also have to place those writers in context. They were writing joyful queer love stories in an era where sodomy was criminalized. They were writing it in the wake of Stonewall. They were writing it as the gay men they knew in real life were dying of AIDS. They were speaking into existence a future they couldn't even see, where three hundred years later two queer men on a spaceship could finally have a happily ever after. The stubborn resilience of that act of faith says everything about why science fiction matters to me... especially in this world, in this moment, right noW.

hard to top winning a $25,000 statewide artist fellowship based on an application for which one of my three work samples was SNW Spock/Pike fanfic, this is truly an all-time career moment and it has been killing me not to talk about it for the last week

"Or perhaps we have both got it wrong, you and I," he suggests with a glint of mischief in his eyes, "and one of Selene's voracious love goddesses is to blame after all!" He takes another long swig of brandy. "There are many worlds in this galaxy, Captain Pike, and many gods among them. It is as your human playwright once said: 'There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy." Pike blinks at him, stupefied. "Klingons know Shakespeare?" "This Klingon does," says J'okar, plainly enjoying his reaction. "Are you familiar with the one about the Macbeths? Ah, it is very good. A love story for the ages, and a pair of extremely able rulers as well. Ahead of their time, both of them, particularly the lady. A pity that they were so misunderstood." Pike clears his throat. "That's not ... really the lesson of Macbeth." "It would be on Q'onos," J'okar points out. "Well, yeah, I guess I can see that."

Captain James Kirk, played by a luminously beautiful young William Shatner, is crouching in like a giant pit of rocks, pointing THE most 1960s-looking ray gun rifle thing out of it. you see, Jim's college BFF goes mad with extrasensory power and Jim now has to try to kill him. it's a whole thing. that's not what is important. what's important here is that Kirk is sweaty, disheveled, with tousled hair and a few artful smudges of blood on his forehead, and he has inexplicably ripped his yellow uniform sweater in such a way that it looks from this shot as though he is wearing a cardigan with nothing under it and is letting it drop sexily off one shoulder. it's such a fucking look. they ONLY wore these uniforms in the pilot. after this they switch to a tunic with a stitched-on black collar that never budges, ever, so when Jim rips his shirt (which happens constantly) (well you follow me on my star trek alt you know that) the black collar never comes loose. it often gives him a kind of bondage look I'm not necessarily mad at, but the whole shirt does not absolutely come open like this, and that's a shame because he has extremely beautiful shoulders/neck/collarbone/chest action going on

"Well, to the best of my knowledge, that's true." “Uh-huh." He folds his arms and glowers down at her. “Is there, maybe, another element to the proceedings that you left out? One which might explain Spock going dead white and practically bolting out of my quarters when I asked him to join me for a Rumarie celebration?" Uhura examines her nails with unflappable serenity. "Hmmm," she says, in a thoughtful tone, deliberately refusing to look at Jim, and plainly enjoying this way too much. "It's possible I left out the other things they did with the Rillan grease." "Uhura!" "Well, it was a fertility festival, Jim." "Did you trick me into inviting Spock over for some kind of Vulcan orgy?" "Not at all," she says sweetly. "Good." "It's hardly an orgy with only two people." "Uhura!" "Leave those if you aren't going to eat them, by the way. I was working through dinner and I'm famished." "Help yourself." He shoots her his coldest glare, though it seems to have absolutely zero effect. "I have to go find my first officer before he reports me to the brass for sexual harassment." Jim could have sworn that her soft blue eyes sharpened just for a moment, almost calculated, as though she were taking him in and reassessing her first impression. That odd sensation of menace grew more intense. Then she threw back her head and laughed, her face the picture of guileless, unguarded delight, and Jim suddenly wondered if he was imagining things. “A true disciple of the Master," she said. "We might do this all night, you and I. What a thrill to find a naval man with such a passion for Shakespeare. It's such a pleasure to perform for those who truly appreciate his words. Might I introduce you to the rest of our company?" Jim gave a courtly bow. "Lay on, Macduff," he said cheerfully, which made her laugh again, and she took him by the arm to lead him into the fray.

there’s no angst like gay noir angst
I didn't answer right away. I hadn't seen the kid in a decade, and suddenly there it was - my first real look at the man Dick Grayson had become in the ten years since he'd walked out of my life without looking back. He was tall and lithe, but a lot less scrawny than before, with real muscle there beneath the blood-sprinkled white shirt. His arms were folded across his chest, and he'd pushed his sleeves up to the elbow, where I could see scars on his forearms I didn't remember. I bet there were more of them everywhere else. He wasn't wearing a tie, and his top button was undone. He looked rumpled, and tired, and bad-tempered, but his eyes were still the same brilliant blue they'd always been, visible even in this dim light. Blue the way the ocean looks, in magazine illustrations of beautiful places that aren't here. Blue like a better sky, over a better city, one that didn't turn everything it touched to gray. Too blue for a place like Gotham. Too warm, and sharp, and real. My eyes were also blue, but there was no sunlight in them, not like his. I was from here, and Dick wasn't. I was gray too. I'd grown up breathing in the smoke and stink of the city, and it turned my blood black like it did to everyone who stayed here too long. Dick had always been too bright a light for Gotham. He'd gotten out, for a little while, he'd managed to escape this place, and ten years was long enough for me to more or less convince myself I was fine with that. But now he was back again, in this dirty gray city where happiness was awfully hard to come by, and he'd have to fight tooth and nail to keep it from dimming that bright light. Which I guess made it selfish of me to be so glad he was back, when there could be nothing but darkness waiting for him here.

"I won't spook him," I said, taking the slip of paper. "I just promised Alfred I'd make sure he was okay." Gordon raised an eyebrow. "Promised Alfred," he said skeptically. "Sure." The man was always too clever by half. "I'm glad he's got his own life now," I told him. "Better for both of us." "Uh-huh. Say it again and I'll almost believe it." "I'm not kidding around. We both work better alone, is all. I won't interfere." "You know if he catches one glimpse of that cape, he'll assume you're trying to babysit him. And he's a man now. He's not gonna take to that." "I promise, I'll leave him be. I just want to know where he is in case I ever need to find him." "Well, try not to need it," said Gordon unsympathetically. "You two were gasoline and matches, by the end. And when this city catches fire, I'm the guy that's gotta put it out."
