This picture shows the temperature inversion over Phoenix trapping the air pollution. The pollution does not cause the inversion, but it is trapped by it. The inversion is due to the climate and geography of the valley and occurs during the late afternoon and evening, continuing through the night.

The Rosette Nebula (SH2-275) from my backyard in South Phoenix. There is also an open star cluster in the middle (NGC 2244)

The name is apt but you may also see the shape of a human skull. Once you've seen it that way it's hard to unsee it.
