The mid-1980s was still a remarkable time to live in the east village, when it seemed like everybody around you was a musician or artist or writer or some sort of interesting creative fuck-up. And it was small, so everybody sort of knew each other. I was lucky, and never took it for granted.

Ha! I’m just fortunate enough to have crossed paths with a handful of people whose talents I’m in awe of (and absolutely none of whom would say the same thing about knowing me) 🤣

Their trombone player and drummer, Stephen Moses, played trombone on all of our albums. He’s a brilliant player!

I’ve been friends with Paul, their drummer, for about forty years now. He’s very much one of the good guys. I sometimes work on this with him...

One of my oldest and dearest friends told me that. And as he’s a founding member of the band, I’ve never had reason to question or doubt him!

They were the perfect collision between disco and The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, which was their intention. Glorious results!

I imagine most people have seen her work, even if they aren’t aware of the fact. She left behind so many iconic images.

An immense talent, and an immense presence. Her passing didn’t go completely unmarked here in NYC, but there’s still a lot of recognition and praise due.

Another sad loss from this past year.

Good point, well made. I’ll be on the Marquee Moon side of that particular divide!
November 27, 2025 at 10:42 PM
Yup. Like countless others who came up during those years, the silly cartoonish trappings of New Wave ensured that a lot of genuine and massive talents would never get the serious regard that they very much deserved.

In my opinion, him and Matthew Ashman were the unsung guitar heroes of the 1980s.
November 27, 2025 at 7:32 PM
Can’t argue with that!

On a similar note, I love what The Wolfmen did with the opening track in 2008, featuring one of my favorite guitar players, Marco Pirroni.

Exactly. And it’s always nice to put that time aside to listen – really listen – to the entire album.
November 27, 2025 at 7:24 PM
Yeah, a great track on an album of great tracks, brilliantly sequenced in a way that takes the listener on an orchestrated journey with no stops worth skipping.
Can’t say that about the vast majority of albums.
The Velvet Underground’s debut is like that, and so is Lou’s Berlin. For me, at least.

Never thought of it as having any best tracks, if I’m honest.
It’s always been one of those albums that I always approach as a whole. It works brilliantly that way.

It’s always a nice surprise to see any mention of Shrapnel – they were a great band but, like so many other great bands, seem to’ve been somehow written out of history, and I don’t know why.
November 27, 2025 at 3:03 PM
That’s brilliant, a classic bill. Shrapnel’s guitar player, Daniel Rey, produced two of our albums and toured with us on guitar.

And a happy one to you and Henry and Chloe!
November 27, 2025 at 2:41 PM
Nor do I, but living in a NYC apartment means that there are always neighbors to be considerate towards. It’s a curse.

That sounds like a brilliant way to spend your time. Really, though, any ol’ excuse to pull out the records...

First St. Blues is always a very welcomed spin round mine, but this one, with Ann-Margret, is guaranteed to do the job every time. Especially when played at volume. That chorus!
