2/3: One line captures this perfectly. Writing to his mother from the Western Front, Private George Coppard tried to lift her worries with a flash of humour:
“Mother, don’t worry, the rats don’t bite often.”

2/2: Diplomats on both sides struggled to find common ground. Tokyo wanted an end to US economic sanctions. Washington insisted that Japan withdraw from China & SE Asia & withdraw from Axis relationships. By late Nov, neither was willing to compromise & the carriers continued to Hawaii.

Cambrai offered military leaders something invaluable: a glimpse of the future, and the first real sense of what a fully mechanised battlefield might one day become.

Day 1 delivered remarkable breakthroughs at a pace barely seen in 1917. But Cambrai is also a story of mechanical breakdowns, isolated flanks & a fierce well-coordinated German counter-attack. Within 2 weeks, both sides had been pushed almost back to where they began.
