8th December 2025.

1/2: Private George Coppard, a Canadian machine-gunner, wrote after moving into a newly captured trench:

“The smell was awful, but we told ourselves it was only the Germans’ socks.”

#OTD in 1941, Churchill finally believed, "we have won the war".

Why? Because 360 Japanese planes attacked the US naval base at Pearl Harbor killing 2,400 Americans - the final act that moved American from an economic supporter, to combat ally.

1/4: Vera Brittain, serving as a Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) nurse, tried to put into words what she was witnessing:

1/7:

“I played so they would know they were not alone.”

An extrodinarily moving line written by Piper Daniel Laidlaw, 7th King’s Own Scottish Borderers about the action at Loos, 1915.

1/2: In 1982, as ships moved south through rough seas towards the Falklands, a Royal Marine wrote this:

“The sea is wild tonight, but so are we.”

Short. Stark. And full of raw determination.

4th December 2025.

1/2: Deliveries from home were a god send for soldiers, a letter, parcel of food, socks or cigarettes.

Writing from France in 1918, Sgt Sam Avery U.S. 32nd Div thanked his sister for a gift that had made its way across the Atlantic:

“Your parcel saved the day.”

3rd December 25.

1/3: Writing to his young daughter, Pte Edward Stanley offered a promise shaped by the English countryside they both knew:

“When the birds return to the hedgerows, I’ll be there too.”
December 3, 2025 at 8:11 AM
2/2: It’s the perfect mix of humour and honesty. This Advent, we’re opening one letter each day, revealing the voices that rarely make the history books but tell us the most about the human experience of war.
December 2, 2025 at 10:17 AM
2/3: One line captures this perfectly. Writing to his mother from the Western Front, Private George Coppard tried to lift her worries with a flash of humour:
“Mother, don’t worry, the rats don’t bite often.”

3/3:
Cambrai offered military leaders something invaluable: a glimpse of the future, and the first real sense of what a fully mechanised battlefield might one day become.

Remembrance Sunday services are taking place across the UK today.

I will pause for 2 minutes at 11am, on the banks of Loch Lomond. A silence to think of those that made the ultimate sacrifice and to give thanks for all that played their part.

Our next tour departs today. Two British guests are heading out with our expert guide, Paul, to explore the battlefields of Ypres and the Somme. From famous sites to hidden corners, they’ll discover the legacy of those who served over a century ago.

1/2:

#OTD in 1914, the First Battle of Ypres opens.

'Favourite' is a difficult term to use sometimes when it comes to battlefields. What I mean by that in this case is, that I love taking guests to these early Great War engagements.

1/3: This epitomises what we do here at Sophie's Great War Tours. A tour is so much more than a journey through history. This photo captures one of those powerful moments, when hours of research, heartfelt storytelling & the uncovering of a family’s wartime story come together.
October 7, 2025 at 7:36 AM
1/2: We have two more special tours out today.

The first with Nick sees 3 generations of a British family undercover the key sites of #Ypres, before following in the footsteps of their relative on the Somme.

#OTD in 1914, Britain declares war on Germany.
What began as a European crisis quickly became a global catastrophe. Over the next 4 years, more than 16 million people would be killed, including almost 1 million from Britain & her empire.

2/2: Another group begins their journey into the town, following in the footsteps of soldiers who arrived over a century ago. Rupert Brooke so poignantly wrote in The Soldier, “there’s some corner of a foreign field that is for ever England.” We walk those corners. We remember.

1/2: This morning, one group of guests wakes in Ypres, ready to see the ground where the British held firm in 1914, where gas was released in 1915 & where troops relentlessly attacked towards Passchendaele in 1917.
