This is the way. The first rule of disaster recovery is that a plan untested is not a viable plan. And the only valid test of a disaster recovery plan is the actual disaster.
The first thing I do when building a NAS is to start some process to load the server, then pull out a disk while it's running.
Putting the disk back then causes a rebuild.
The point is that you need to plan for disk failure and be comfortable with it.
