Progressive organisations purge on the basis of belief but cannot admit to themselves that this is what they are doing. It's not just that they're breaking the law (though they are), it's crippling cognitive dissonance that sustains this.

...and I was thrilled to discover that John Relly Beard is buried in Brooklands cemetery, in Sale, my once and once again home. Odd that I spent 5 years going past this everyday on the way to school.

I grew up in Sale so was delighted to learn that John Relly Beard was, latterly, minister at Sale Unitarians. Unfortunately they closed in 1972 (the year my family arrived in Sale) and this is,was far as I can tell, where their chapel building was.

So, there I was in my ministry flat, which is in Sale/Ashton on Mersey, reading The Autobiography of Satan by John Relly Beard (no, he's not Satan), when I read this in the preface:
