Taking care of Electron Microscopy @mpibp.bsky.social. Yay for #cryoEM and #cryoET ❄️🔬but frozen is not always better. Also, #viruses 🦠 rule.
My favourite anecdote at the end of this exciting CEOS filter/Timepix3 installation week @mpibp.bsky.social: the (rather mundane) leftover spare part from the installation kit.

We forgot to hug the box though! Well… here it is anyway.🙂

@mpibp.bsky.social’s handsome STEM scan of the day 🤩
Guess the crystal? Hint: S136

If I could ask all #cryoEM samples for one thing, it’d be to *please* behave like 1um TetraSpecks.

Deryck Mills is always missed dearly @mpibp.bsky.social, but some weeks his absence is more obvious than others. Just bought a new 30um aperture. Opened the bottom drawer of Deryck’s trolley days later - and found this 🤩

Right. Technically, this does make sense in German. But who tf runs their marketing department.

A #FIBSEM #cryoET drama in 4 acts. Prelude: Aquilos shuttle rod does not reach cryo stage due to mechanical misalignment.

Gentle reminder for cryoEM ❄️🔬 folks with Autoloader systems out there: check every now and then that the cassette back plate is still screwed on tightly… 🤦🏻‍♀️

I think someone in my neighbourhood has gone bonkers from the sweltering heat

I guess this is what a completely simultaneous fail/win situation looks like

#LabLife at #CEITECScience. Didn’t dare to check what’s inside

I hope these STEM detectors just 👋 at us and aren't signaling SOS...❄️🔬

This one is even weirder…cryoEM sample “bends around” left corner of the ETD image. No grids were harmed in the process.
April 3, 2025 at 2:29 PM
Nearly had a 🖤 attack today when looking at this ETD image of a ❄️🔬 grid in our PFIB. Turns out to be “just charging” - and the dent is a distorted image of the electron column pumping aperture? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Ever wondered how the automated apertures of a cryoEM ❄️🔬know where they are and where to go 🚗? Not sure what I expected and why I find this so cute - but there's a tiny LED💡that looks at a teeny-tiny ruler 📏 and passes its info on to a controller...

Meanwhile, me [giving a “flash talk”]:

Dynamic conical dark field imaging alignments could just as well be renamed to comical DF alignments - I think this looks hilarious.

Just learned that *knee surgery* is required for STEM on a Krios cryoEM🤨? I might have misunderstood… but ours got a brand new extra knee 🤷🏻‍♀️
February 4, 2025 at 4:50 PM
In case you wondered what it looks like "in real life" when the FluScreen of a Krios cryoEM is retracted/inserted: here you go. ❄️🔬

Wish I knew who makes this shady #StreetArt gang hang out in #Valencia 🤷‍♀️

#cryoEM sample storage cleanup (new year - new pucks) revealed an anonymous Polara cartridge? 😐 Our Polara was retired in 2020… 🤷🏻‍♀️
Also, I wasn’t aware @mpibp.bsky.social used to make those giant HPF planchette storage boxes. Not sure what to do with those.

End-of-year #cryoEM activity @mpibp.bsky.social: I’m the chiller refiller. Haskris notoriously more thirsty than vanderHeijden. Happy Holidays everyone🎄
