A Purkinje neuron from the human cerebellum, captured in stunning detail by Cajal, with its numerous and intricate dendritic branches - Santiago Ramon y Cajal ca 1900 (Cajal Institute, CSIC, Madrid). ‘Net Neurality’, one of my earliest science-art paintings, inspired by Cajal’s drawings. 🧪🐡 Had the absolute pleasure of illustrating the latest study from the labs of @onamy.bsky.social & Arnaud Moris. Their brilliant study identifies new alternative coding sequences (ARFs) in the HIV genome and some of the peptides from these ARFs could trigger an immune response!

My winning piece was featured on the cover for Molecular Cell's special issue on 𝐑𝐍𝐀 𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲.

List of winners and their pieces for 2024 Preeref "The Art of Science" competition This film noir style cover is set in a lab where scientists are using various techniques to solve the mysteries of the RNA world. From the poster at the center, taped notes, articles on the floor, boxes of papers and newspaper clippings you can tell much progress has been made. I chose a restrictive color palette to create the feel of a detective's office. I used spotlights and vibrant colors to direct the viewer's attention to different topics of RNA biology, like alternative splicing, stem-loop structures, ribosome binding, transcription and RNA modifications. This digital art work is intended for molecular biologists. I also left some easter eggs that RNA biologists and science fiction enthusiasts would enjoy. This piece was on the cover of the journal 'Molecular Cell' and its special issue on RNA biology. This issue was released just days before the Nobel Prize was awarded for the discovery of microRNA and its role in gene regulation and confirms the importance of RNA research!

🔬 𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗳𝗮𝗿 𝘄𝗲’𝘃𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲!
The humble compound microscope gave way to the #electronmicroscope (1930s), then the #confocalmicroscope (1950s) with which we could obtain high resolution images.

🧪360 years later we are tracking #singlemolecules and can even create 3D images of samples based on “feel”🤯
