In Lufia and the Fortress of Doom you don't have to actually find the Purple Newt to continue the game. If you return to chef of Herat after speaking with the Wizard of Taste, he'll proceed as though you had the magic flavor, skipping the whole quest. This appears to be due to a missing flag.
