What's causing the housing crisis in the UK?

🚤 Reform think it's the 40k people that arrived by irregular means.

🏡 Over 300k households presented as homeless in each of the last 2 years.

🏚️There are 1.5 million vacant or unoccupied dwellings in the UK.

💰190k properties in the UK are foreign owned

Discussing the Carbon Budget at Solihull Council this evening a couple of sticking by points:

1. Housing isn’t counted, even when the Council own them
2. The airport isn’t counted, not even the 3.75% the Council owns.

The only chance we have of tackling the climate is through painful honesty…

The Renters' Rights Bill is a welcome step towards improved living standards for renters.

But there's a gaping hole in the legislation...

We desperately need rent controls to stop tenants being treated as cash cows by landlords.

Rachel Reeves is threatening yet more public spending cuts due to the increasing cost of borrowing.

But our services simply can’t take any more austerity.

The Government should tax the super-rich fairly to help fund public services and close the inequality gap.

I have the same sympathy for those whose homes are lost by fire, or bombing.

Losing your home and safety is tragic, whether by climate or conflict.

I would hope coverage was equivalent for all tragedies.

More wealth shouldn’t = more coverage.

Request was sent yesterday, and the Chair claims to only have seen it today.

Chair has used his discretion to allow 2 Conservatives to speak, but refused one Green local Councillor.

A spare bed in a hotel is an inefficiency. It’s lost revenue. You’re not using your asset optimally.

If you run a hospital with no spare beds, you have ambulances waiting outside. You will have patients in corridors, not receiving the care they need.

Health is a public good, not a private service.
The only reason the private sector has any spare capacity (it is never cost effective to run at spare capacity) is because they have been promised NHS contracts.

Why not fix NHS pay and bring that capacity back in house?

Better for patients. Better for NHS staff. Better for the tax payer.

The criticism coming from the right, when the arguments against climate change being real or anthropogenic don’t land, is that doing anything about it is too expensive.

To be clear: NOT DOING ANYTHING ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE IS THE MOST EXPENSIVE THING WE CAN DO AS A SPECIES!
This question is a good opportunity for me to share the OBR's thorough analysis of the costs of climate investment

Their basic conclusion is that it is far more efficient to invest heavily sooner rather than later

We cannot afford to not invest in reducing our CO2 emissions

We need to remove the profit motive from the health service, to the greatest extent possible.

This is the best way to incentivise good health, and address the massive health inequalities in the country.

It’s almost 20 years of healthy life difference in parts of the West Midlands.

We are part of the same global economy that is producing the same symptoms everywhere.

Other symptoms may include:
🤑 alt-right grifting
🤥 disinformation
📣 populism
🏳️‍⚧️ culture wars and marginalisation of minorities.

There are many things to fix, but most cascade from this one issue.
The combined net worth of America's twelve wealthiest people passed $2 trillion last year.

12 people. $2 trillion.

Meanwhile, U.S. homelessness increased 18% in 2024.

Our problem isn’t an issue of resources.

Our problem is ever-expanding wealth inequality.
