It's not just individuals it's also industrial farms who leave food in the field and over plant even though they can't ship all of the food they have to cities before it rots. Those farms can grow 10 cabbages throw away 5 and still sell cheaper than a small local farm who wastes nearly nothing.

The actual pdf from ReFED is way more helpful than the article. It actually breaks down all the different sources, causes and food types.

I watched a great video essay about exactly this titled: "Elon Musk doesn't understand Cyberpunk." They all want the aesthetics of sci-fi without any understanding of the social criticism of corporate domination.

There is a LOT of overlap! "Vaults" are important in both (with different contexts). Also weird guns and evil corporations. Borderlands takes place on alien planets. Fallout is Earth but a "50s-Americana" alternate future. That's it. Borderlands is arguably goofier but Fallout is a bit silly too.
