As Soil Chemistry Group we study soil chemical processes at the very small scale to better understand soil functions at larger scales. By developing, modelling and implementing soil chemical knowledge, we contribute to the sustainable use of our soils.
‼️Hot off the press right before the 🎄break: PhD candidate @tulca.bsky.social investigated the impact of earthworms (both dead and alive) on silicate mineral weathering, in the context of Enhanced Silicate Weathering. Surprising: earthworms that died during the experiment had the biggest effect!
I am happy to announce that our paper "How earthworms thrive and drive silicate rock weathering in an artificial organo-mineral system" has been published in Applied Geochemistry! 🪱🪨

Here the link to know more about living (and dead!) earthworms and weathering:

Amazing first publication by current PhD candidate @uppsalauniversitet.bsky.social Péter Garamszegi, who had the original, innovative idea to quantify earthworm activity in a non-harmful way #ProudSupervisor @soc-wur.bsky.social
Earthworm presence is not the same as earthworm activity, as they can be inactive for protracted periods of time. Our brilliant MSc student Péter Garamszegi came up with an easy method to quantify earthworm activity, using the difference in density between earthworms with and without a filled [...]

Steentjes strooien tegen uitstoot
Kleine steentjes die CO2 consumeren lijken, mits op grote schaal toegepast, een aanzienlijke bijdrage te kunnen leveren aan de klimaatopgave, ter land en ter zee.
