I've got a few faves, for various reasons, but my very favorite is Judith Slaying Holofernes by Artemisia Gentileschi. Caravaggio did a pretty solid version, as well. I love art depicting strong women, particularly from eras of art rife with misogyny. Their depiction alone was resistance.
This is an image of two women and a man. The man lays on a table draped in red and white cloth while one woman in a blue dress with her hair wrapped in a white headwrap holds him down, and a woman in a golden gown with a milk maid's braid atop her head beheads him with a small sword. In the image, he uses his arms to try to fight back, but fails. The colors in the image are rich jewel tones, with a dark, moody energy to the painting. Blood drips from the surface where he's laying, presumably from the wound on his neck. The image is violent and raw, and the women are strong and confident in their choice to slay Holofernes. The story behind the image is about a Jewish widow slaying an Assyrian General, Holofernes, to save her city from invasion. The women's determination is shown through their expression.
