Kings fans deserve a threepeat, but this era of teams is Sound and Fury Signifying Nothing stuff. Like a house party that plays too much drum n bass music

was reminiscing over a ‘00 Hunter S Thompson ESPN column earlier today, and the way the doctor closed out the column was such a great line

I don’t pay too much attention to the NFL, but the assistant coaching ranks crack me up. Mike Kafka or Davis Webb, get REAL

sorry, your 40s rule, all kinds of weird stuff happens to the waves/generations of sports personalities in your life

right! and i think the authority that math and material sciences have accrued in our age isn’t all undeserved— much advance has come, more than religion or the “human sciences” can point to. But i think the power is surprising to some math/science lovers, who see themselves as “just” studying things

I think the prevalence of ugly minds in a certain field increases as it becomes a lane for economic or social power. At one point, theology did it, now some social sciences and STEM fields hold such appeal.

as a math enjoyer + word nerd, I think “fault” gets us into a goofy discussion, but I think a historical/contextual lens helps: math (or Pop Math) and material sciences and technology are more the language of modern authority and power than is verbal or literary (which hasn’t always been the case!)

these geometries are incredible. 7-3!

and it’s a good example of the “tech change is neither good nor bad nor is it neutral” thing— the interstate is almost impossible for any of us to imagine not existing, it’s changed our world for good and bad, undoubtedly. “traditional” knowledge has to adapt/modify, or die out
November 11, 2025 at 10:59 PM
right! there’s also some places in this country where the contrast between old highways and the interstate are still apparent (eg, Route 66 in the Southwest). motels advertising themselves to drivers coming by vs “standard exit signage to distant hotel”.

for sure, old school conservatism (Wendell Berry flavored) had theories of place and local knowledge that were quasi-Anglo or Tolkien in their conceit. But between the speed/convenience of travel to the standardization of highway exits, to the perspective human beings took to their land…it’s gone.

hell, small c conservatism got demolished by the Interstate Highway System

no dude, this is good work, you planted seeds, you get to harvest
November 11, 2025 at 10:36 PM
i was making idle small talk, dude, and now i’m confronted with the bonkers levels of diversity in human beings. (:90 guy here)
