Mr Arkell's first concern is that there should be a full retraction at the earliest possible date in Private Eye and he will also want his costs paid. His attitude to damages will be governed by the nature of your reply. Yours etc. This letter has now been replied to as follows: Dear Sirs, We acknowledge your letter of 29th April referring to Mr. J. Arkell We note that Mr Arkell's attitude to dam-ages will be governed by the nature of our reply and would therefore be grateful if you could inform us what his attitude to damages would be, were he to learn that the nature of our reply is as follows: fuck off. Yours etc. Readers will be kept abreast of any further developments. ARKELL v. Pressdram In April 1971, the Eye carried the story of how James Arkell, a retail credit manager, had dispensed with the services of two bailiffs who were on bail on charges of conspiracy to create a public mischief - despite the fact that he had for the previous year been in receipt of a monthly kickback of £20 from their company, Tracing Services Ltd, for putting debt-collecting work their way. It was not an especially spectacular story, but the subsequent letter from Mr Arkell's solicitors Goodman Derrick( GOODMAN, Lord) and the Eye's response set an important legal precedent which is still often cited as Arkell v. Pressdram (see letters below) The oft-cited punchline is that Mr Arkell was never heard from again, but in fact a libel writ arrived by return of post, complete with a "curt note" from Goodman Derrick. A year later came the news that Mr Arkell had resigned from his job with Granada and gone back to "his former business of debt collecting". In August 1972 Goodman Derrick offered to drop the case and pay the Eye's costs in return for an agreed statement only for their humiliated client to refuse any wording that involved his name appearing again in the magazine. The case fell apart and the action was dismissed "with costs to be taxed and paid to the Defendants by the Plaintiffs". "In view of the above," noted the Eye, "Mr Arkell has now, albeit belatedly, complied with the suggestion made to him at an earlier stage in the proceedings."

Apparently this fake Reverend is describing me as a "moral zealot" for setting out the racism, Islamophobia, anti-LBGT comments, ableism, and fat shaming in the 1st edition of Kate Clanchy's memoir. At least I'm not a defender of bigotry, or a supporter of bigots.

In England & Wales political belief isn't protected. It is in Northern Ireland. Only a religious or philosophical belief is protected. The District Judge elides political and philosophical belief, and ignores the evidence of Robinson's racism and Islamophobia which are not even political belief.
42. That is at the forefront of my concern. None of the officers can satisfy me otherwise due to their inability to recall or expand upon questions they asked you or topics that were covered during the examination process or explain what appears to be a complete lack of expedition between the time of your initial stop and the decision being made to detain you. As I have said earlier, I accept it may be impossible to drawn a line between your political beliefs, philosophical beliefs and terrorism as there can be a clear overlap. A police officer wishing to question you for the purpose of determining whether you are a terrorist or have links to terrorism through associates may wish to explore the nature and intensity of those beliefs, your mindset, your associations and an officer will not know initially what side of the line you may fall. They may cross the line into terrorism or links to terrorism within the spirit of the purposes of Schedule 7. However, in this case, based on the evidence, although your political views and interests may be a factor in making a determination under s. 40, the inability for the officers to remember what questions were asked or what topics were covered with any degree of reliability calls into question whether I can be satisfied there is a basis for finding that the stop was actually for the statutory purpose and not driven by knowledge of your political beliefs and therefore discriminatory.
