Now, in a first for Asia, researchers travelling by motorbike, boat and foot in Bangaldesh's eastern highlands are deploying a countermeasure that may allow them to eliminate malaria for good: the R21 vaccine.

Rate of malaria deaths last year dropped to pre-pandemic levels, but total cases are still rising, WHO has warned.

The annual malaria report also noted targets aren't being met: incidence grew from 58 to 60.4 per 1,000 people at risk between 2015 & 2023, nearly 3x higher than the target
