The journalist Jeff Sharlet sets the record straight on Charlie Kirk: 'He was an opponent of free speech. There's no other way to cut it, for a man who created something called Professor Watchlist, School Board Watchlist, to name and frighten people from teaching, who advocated restrictions on what school teachers could teach, who called for - and there's a clip you can see online — who called for the televised public executions, and he had a pretty broad category in mind. But what was really chilling was he wanted this to be required viewing for children. And you can look at this clip, and you can see his colleagues. They're sort of trolling, but Kirk, again and again, pulls it back to seriousness, and he says, "No, no, no, this isn't a joke. This has to be a holy experience, a teaching experience for children, watching enemies be killed." That is not a champion of free speech!'

Once I’m done drawing a page it gets scanned and then slid back into the sleeve on top of the layout so I can quickly reference it for continuity.

Then it’s draw, sleep, repeat until all the art is done.

Last steps are editing and pre-press, then it’s sent off to be printed.
Binder open to a 2 page spread. The left side shows a finished, shaded pencil drawing with all text removed, ready to be scanned. The page on the right shows the next layout sketch to be drawn. Both pages are covered in notes that will be used when I am doing the final text layout (aka writing the final draft)

I print my digital layouts (complete with placeholder text) at 25% opacity and slide them into place to create a dummy book.

I pull the print outs as needed and throw them on a light table to do the final drawings. The book is printed at magazine dimensions so I’m basically working at scale.
Binder open to two page spread of illustrations intermixed with short paragraphs of text. As I said before, this isn’t a standard format graphic novel. This spread is a “blog entry” written by the journalist reporting back about what they saw and experienced. They are observing instead of directly interacting with the crowd, so there isn’t much dialogue here. Other parts of the book look more like a standard graphic novel without so much expositional text. If you look closely at the images, you can see elements from the cover starting to appear in the story context. Sometimes it is planned. Sometimes it’s a coincidental opportunity.

With the story basically written, I start layouts.

Each book has a binder filled with cheap plastic sleeves where I lay out all of the illustrations. I always work in 2 page spreads because that’s how you see the finished book.

I use post-its to get the pacing right, then start sketching

I like post it’s because they stick to the plastic sleeves real well and are still able to be easily moved around as I endlessly tweak the plot.a Sometimes I sketch the layout if a panel configuration strikes me right away, but mostly these are just broad descriptions of what needs to be happening in each panel. Image shows binder open to two pages. The one on the left has a loose sketch at the bottom and a column of text on the left. The one on the right just has empty boxes laid out on it. My books are drawn traditionally with pencil and ink, but I do all the layout digitally so that I can quickly move and scale things until I get an arrangement I like. The journalist’s articles take up a lot more room than traditional graphic novel text, so I lay them out first to make sure I keep a good balance of text to images. This version of the article is still very rough, but it’s enough to solidify the number of inches I am working with when I write the final draft.
