WASHINGTON (AP) — Supreme Court seems likely to expand president's power and back Trump's firing of independent-agency board members.

Pointing out (because when else would I get to show off this research) that about 533 U.S.–produced features, from both major studios and independents, were released into theaters in 1957. In 2017, there were 131 given wide release, including independents. It's astounding how output has shrunk.

Kavanaugh pretty much just said this out loud
The practical effect of overturning Humphrey’s will be that Republican presidents can stack the formerly independent agencies with their copartisans and SCOTUS will be cool with everything they do but when a Dem POTUS does the same Roberts et al will declare all those agencies’ actions unlawful.
In a memo John Roberts wrote just 4 yrs out of law school, he said the “time may be ripe to reconsider the existence” of independent agencies & bring them back into the executive branch. Now he’s poised to end what he has long called “a constitutional anomaly.”

"Individual liberty" is when conservatives decide everything. Their concept of liberty is just domination, not freedom to do what they want, but freedom to force everyone else to do what they want. bsky.app/profile/donm...
The only way to assure individual liberty is to hand unprecedented governmental power to the guy engaged in blatant democratic backsliding
Kavanaugh: Broad delegations to unaccountable agencies are dangerous for individual liberty! We have used the major questions doctrine to prevent agencies from overreaching.

Kagan's line of questioning here was pretty much Gorsuch's music to invoke the nondelegation doctrine, which he then jumped in and did.

Remember: this case isn't about making Trump king. This case is part of FedSoc's generational project to destroy the fed gov't's regulatory power.
Kagan: formal arguments should not blind us to the real-world realities of what our decisions do.

When we place all these agencies under complete presidential control...we are left with "a president with control over everything, including over much of the law-making" in this country.

Wild: So both Biden & Trump bypassed Congress to send aid to Israel—to support Israel’s "defense" in "wartime."

That "defense" made other nations embargo Israel.

Now (despite the Trump-led "ceasefire"), this policy would give the US another way to send even more arms to Israel.
NEW: Buried in the new defense bill is a policy to fill weapon “gaps” Israel gets as other nations embargo it.

As in: citing "wartime" needs, the US armed Israel’s genocide.
Nations responded by restricting weapons to Israel.
Now, citing those very restrictions, the US may send Israel *even more.*

This is horrific and exactly what those of us in Black studies, gender studies, women’s studies have been warning our colleagues in the sciences about. Their seeming neutrality will not save them.
Heartbreaking. The University of Nebraska will terminate its entire Earth science department.

One of the country's most successful and respected geology & climate programs: gone.

When ideologues & politicians are threatened by the very act of studying climate change, I wonder: who of us is next?
It's over.

Despite the fact that the academic council recommended against it, despite the fact that the program brought in more tuition than it cost, and despite the fact that Nebraskans need & deserve this expertise, Earth & Atmospheric Sciences will be cut.
