I don't think you're necessarily expected to feel personal attachment to each one of them (at least not before gatherer quests), they're just examples to support Meteion's belief that misery is inevitable, no matter where you look. Every other planet goes to shit, so why have hope for yours?

It'd be more of a straightforward emotional punch, but I feel like it'd lose most of its intended message in favor of "the final days again but more". To me, the point of the dead ends is more "there is nowhere in the universe that won't suffer and die in the end"

it was much easier to look down on anything detrimental to connection quality, because a bad match just made things miserable for everybody. Obviously nowadays that gap is much less noticeable (for multiple reasons), but I admit I haven't 100% unlearned the negative association (2/2)

I don't doubt that things have gotten better, but I feel like some of it must just be the memory of delay-based games. People still argued for wi-fi when it was less fine, and a lot of fighting games used to just kind of feel like shit in anything but the best of conditions, so- (1/2)
