the crisis in which the University of Chicago is now engulfed -- one entirely of its own making, and which has led to the (hopefully temporary) suspension of admissions into numerous PhD programs in the humanities -- represents I think a seismic event in the history of American higher education

Okay, but do you think they'll make all the archives Dobson took with him public again? Asking for a friend.

Annual (late) birthday reminder to give blood! Especially if you're O- like me -- it's both the universal donor type AND the only type we can receive, and I think a lot about the O- donors who gave me their blood when I needed it.

The secret is that Columbia hates to dip into their endowment for anything, even supporting students during a pandemic! (We were told that to expect them to use their vast financial resources was "naïve".)
When universities with the money to fight back refuse, where does that leave the rest of us? Of course we’ll do what we can, but we’re deeply constrained in ways those with endowments in the BILLIONS aren’t.
So I did the math. Columbia needs a 2.7%-ish annual return on 15 billion dollars to replace the 400 million the government is threatening to pull. Not a heavy investment lift.

Poking through my current institution's archives to see what girlhood stuff they have lying around and now I'm thinking about all the archives yet to be lost to climate change. I hope anything lost in the LA fires is noted in catalogues with this kind of specificity because that's historical, too.
